Gaming legend and Fable 3 creator Peter Molyneux appeared at the Eurogamer Expo earlier this week and rather simply explaining the new features we’ll see in the game, he revealed some of the unusual movie influences on the Fable series. Is anyone else surprised to see Mad Max and Kill Bill on the list?

Molyneux kicked off by talking about the first Fable which took inspiration from Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow. Parts of the dark forest that the game creator’s made following the setting in Burton’s film made it into the final game.

Another interesting movie choice is The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945) which Molyneux says had a major influence on the mechanic within Fable which has the look of your hero change depending on whether you opt to do good or evil.

Bizarrely, Fable 2 drew upon Mad Max 2. The relationship between Mel Gibson’s character and his dog inspired the similar connection between the protagonist and his dog, sister and family in Fable 2.

The other unlikely influence on Fable 2 and Fable 3 is Kill Bill Vol.1. The Bride’s swordtastic bloodbath fight with the Crazy 88 contributed to Molyneux and his team working on one button combat. He says Fable 3 will feature vastly better contextual combat.

Two other films highlighted by Molyneux as influences on Fable 3 were Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006) and the way it represents paris with a limited palette of monochrome shades, yellow and gold (Fable 3 will feature a similar use of colour schemes) and Oliver (2005).

It’s interesting to hear the thought process behind Fable 3 and we’re really excited to get our hands on the finished game. Are you looking forward to Fable 3? Are there other games where you think the movie influences are obvious?
