This morning, Steve Ballmer told a crowded lecture theatre at LSE that he was more excited about Kinect than Windows Phone 7, the latter of which is launching next week. The Kinect is further off, but Ballmer certainly seems to want to up the ante with the hype for the Kinect, even if you do need to tidy up for it to work properly.

Ballmer was enthusiastic about both the Kinect and Windows Phone 7 (“I LOVE my Windows Phone 7!”), and said that tablets had to wait until Microsoft had cracked the smartphone market second time around. He also said that the Kinect was the device he was “most keen on”. When asked what his favourite Kinect game is, he bellowed: “BEACH VOLLEYBALL BABY! BOOM!” simultaneously leaping into the air, walloping back down onto the LSE lecture stage floor, red faced and sweating.

Sorry will presumably Windows Phone and Kinect to flop substantially. Ballmer also said that the Windows Phone Kin would be a success

Windows Phone 7 has to succeed, Microsoft need that now more than ever. If Kinect fails then it won't be the end of the world, most gamers don't want to throw themselves around a room. Everyone I know has a Wii but nobody uses them, except my mum, on Wii Fit.

I agree about WP7, MS can't afford to fail again. Sanna makes a good point – Ballmer said Kin would be a success, of course he did, he's the CEO. I think WP7 is on more solid ground than previous MS forays into mobile. But how does the hype and excitement compare from Kin to WP7?

Both should be very successful, and both are unique and different products. Kinect is a unit that I fully intend to integrate into my expensive Home Theater system. Gesture recognition is far more advanced and ultimately more useful than trying to find and play with a remote. If Microsoft can enable MVK format and enable the usage of an external NTFS USB drive on the XBOX360 then they would have conquered one of the biggest complaints. However as a media hub the potential is limitless. Windows Phone 7 presents a shift away from your typical “button phones”, The
phone is highly active and extremely “connected”. in and out of apps is becoming obsolete once you look at the live tiles and the aggregate information it produces. Everyone who has actually spent some time on the phone has been extremely impressed with it's speed, function and layout .Look for Windows Phone 7 devices to come with, DNLA, Dual Core processors, Tegra2 chips, Dolby, free cloud storage, free office Live, Messenger, XBox Live, Full ZuneHD, multi-tasking assurance for all standard apps,Flash support, HD Video, HTC Sense……the list goes on. This IS the full featured phone that we've been waiting for.

Kinect ticks all the boxes for our familys gaming and the gesture recognition intergration is ideal.
