The BBC iPlayer is going international! The Beeb has appointed Mark Smith, who’d previously been acting manager of the UK version of iPlayer, to helm a project that will create an international version. At the Edinburgh International Television Festival two weeks ago, BBC director general Mark Thompson promised an international iPlayer would arrive “within a year”. He sent out a public invite for anyone to add him as a friend on Game Center, but found that his Game Center account reached capacity at 500. Is this going to be a problem, or is it high enough to only affect the prolific few?

Acer Liquid Metal Froyo phone dated!

Exclusive: The Acer Liquid Metal Froyo Android smartphone we covered the leak of earlier this morning is the real deal, we’ve confirmed. An Acer UK spokesperson confirmed to us that the handset, which features a metal backplate, will run Android 2.2 Froyo, and will be on sale at the end of October. Acer declined to confirm the specifications otherwise, but we’d expect them to be as reported originally: a 3.6-inch WVGA touchscreen and 800MHz CPU. Needless to say, we’ll be hunting down a hands on with the Acer Liquid Metal just as soon as we can.

Sony has launched its latest salvo in the PlayStation Move vs Kinect battle. It’s called YayButtons and is a site dedicated to telling us just why buttons are brilliant and by extension, Kinect with its arms and leg waving, controller-free dream is a crock. Is Sony right to slam Kinect for going button-free or is it just trying too hard?

iTunes Instant is here! After Google Instant and the genius of YouTube Instant, the realtime search magic has been pointed at Apple’s online store. iTunes Instant is the creation of 15-year-old Stephen Ou (the brains behind two start-ups One Extra Lap and Pitch.ly). Like Google Instant and YouTube Instant, iTunes Instant throws up suggestions as you type with Ou getting a little bit of money through the iTunes affiliate programme if you click on any of the links.

While YouTube Instant’s creator got a job offer from Google, Internet entrepreneur and professional big mouth Jason Calacanis has offered to hire Ou. Want to get an instant job offer and instant internet fame? Creating a Google Instant-inspired project seems to be the answer.

YouTube trialling live streaming

YouTube is trialling a live broadcast service that will compete with the likes of the Wiley-dominated Ustream and Livestream. The trial starts today, for just 48 hours, and isn’t even in beta yet – this is just the alpha trial – although you can tune in to the live broadcasts.
