The BlackBerry PlayBook tablet was unveiled at RIM’s Developer Conference in the US overnight UK time, and on paper at least, it sounds like a winner. But will it be one when it comes to launch time? RIM’s just given the first official indication of when the BlackBerry PlayBook will receive an international launch, and it’s a long way off. Grab your diary and read on for the details.

The 7-inch, 1GHz BlackBerry PlayBook tablet is set to go on sale in the US “in early 2011″, according to the company, but if you’re a BlackBerry fan on these fair shores, you might have to stick it out much longer. Rollouts in “international markets” won’t begin until “calendar Q2″ 2011, RIM announced in a statement to journalists.

Unfortunately, “calendar Q2″ is suit shorthand for the months of April to June, suggesting we’re not likely to see the BlackBerry PlayBook before April next year, and might have to wait into the Summer while RIM puts the finishing tweaks on its QNX powered new BlackBerry tablet OS.

And of course, it’s entirely possible that a second gen iPad will be on sale by that point. But hey, whoever said there isn’t space for more than one tablet to thrive in the market? Bring on the BlackBerry PlayBook we say, but RIM, hurry it up!

Nice to see Apple getting some competition to encourage them to add extras to the iPad. The PlayBook and the Samsung tablet have pretty good specs
