Research In Motion (RIM) could be about to reveal plans for the next-generation BlackBerry OS that will power the rumoured ‘BlackPad’ tablet.

It looks as though RIM may not be launching the so-called BlackPad at the BlackBerry Developer’s Conference in San Francisco today. What it is going to do is have someone talk about the brand new operating system that will run on the BlackPad, hopefully revealing a lot more about the pad in the process. If we get to see a few glimpses of the hardware too.. well, we won’t be complaining.

Boy Genius Report has confirmed with RIM that today’s keynote session with co-SEO Mike Lazaridis will focus on the company’s plans for the next-generation tablet platform. As this is a developer conference, we are hoping for some juicy details about how the new OS will work and what kind of features it will enable on future devices.

The BlackPad is rumoured to be a tablet computer roughly comparable with the Apple iPad or Samsung Galaxy Tab, but designed to be paired with a BlackBerry mobile phone rather than working as a standalone device.

It still continues to amaze me how slow companies like Samsung, HP and now Blackberry have been to compete with Apple. A tablet is a pretty expensive luxury, if you're going to buy one you've probably bought an iPad by now. Apple leads, everyone else follows…
