There’s been a lot of hoo-ha over rumours that Facebook is building a smartphone, as outed by TechCrunch earlier in the week. TechCrunch outed the rumour, which Facebook then vigorously denied. TechCrunch then tore apart the response from Facebook to the rumours that the social networking giant was building a phone, and then Zuckerberg came out and talked about it.

But still, even after Facebook has spoken about the project and its possibilities, saying that we’re not going to see a Facebook phone anytime soon, we’re no closer to knowing what’s actually going on and where Facebook’s roadmap is headed.

There’s a convenient grey area for Zuckerberg, around the fact that the building of a Facebook phone would be contracted out, and then branded with Facebook – if this happened, could we say Facebook had built this phone? Well, both yes and no. Yes, it is a Facebook phone, but strictly speaking, it was not built by Facebook.
