iPad VLC player app approved

An iPad VLC player app has been approved! The move makes it much easier to get videos from sources other than iTunes (whatever they might be *cough*) onto your iPad. It looks like Apple’s new, slightly more reasonable approach to policing the iTunes App Store is taking effect…

After softening its stance to Google Voice apps, Apple has now allowed VLC Media Player for iPad to slip quietly into the iTunes App Store. It’ll handles almost all of the common video formats and let you sling them onto your iPad via iTunes without needing to convert them.

We saw Apple softening its stance earlier this year when CineXPlayer brought iPad AVI support to the iTunes App Store but VLC Media Player goes a little further with a wider range of supported formats to choose from.

The iPad VLC Media Player app is great news and opens the door for more apps offering access to formats other than Apple’s preferred H264 MP4 files. If third party apps can tap into the Apple’s newly-announced AirPlay feature, it could also be a boon to anyone who nabs the new Apple TV but doesn’t fancy slapping down piles of cash on iTunes rentals.

You can grab the VLC Media Player app for free now from the iTunes App Store. Initial reviews are glowing but we’d love to hear what you make of it. Hit the comments to let us know how you get on.

Yes. I wonder where people get their DivX AVIs and high def MKV files from? Hmmm. Still, it's a welcome move – will they work with AirPlay is what I really want to know. I assume not.
