Sony flexible e-reader prototype outed

Sony has outed a seriously intriguing flexible e-reader concept that promises to be lighter and sturdier than previous e-paper prototypes. Could this Sony flexible e-reader be the future of the Sony Reader? It looks pretty likely…

Japan gets all the good stuff first and over at Sony’s annual Dealer Convention, the Sony flexible e-paper e-reader stood out among the avalanche of 3D TVs.

The big difference with the Sony flexible e-reader prototype compared to others we’ve spied in the past is that it uses plastic substrate rather than glass. That means it’s able to be lighter and more sturdy increasing the potential for it to become a rollable electronic paper you can bung in your bag.

Sony hasn’t talked about when the flexible e-reader prototype might be ready for the big stage but reports suggest the demo unit was pretty advanced. We’ve seen a few intriguing flexible e-readers before (the Hearst Skiff reader and LG e-paper plans to name just two) but Sony’s design is possibly the most finished looking design we’ve seen.

Grab your future gazing goggles and tell us: how long will it be before we’re rocking flexible e-readers on the bus?
