Alcatel OT-980 budget Android phone unboxed: photos

We’ve been watching the Alcatel OT-980 progress from mildly interesting messaging phone into potentially the best cheapest smartphone yet throughout 2010, and next month it finally goes on sale in the UK. We don’t like to hang about though, so we’ve got one for review right now: check it coming out of its carton and ask us what you want to know right here.

We said when we went hands on last week that the Alcatel OT-980 promised to eclipse every other budget Android phone we’ve seen so far, and after playing with our review sample, we reckon it’s still on target to. This little chap is shockingly fast, pulling up websites at speed and locking onto our position on Google Maps without a hitch. We had Dropbox downloaded and running ASAP, and were able to access all our files on the go.

Digging through the settings, we also found Alcatel’s not been too sloppy: there are extra options to make use of the slide out keyboard to lock the screen when closed, or answer a call when pulled out.

We’ll be giving the Alcatel OT-980 a full review next week, but in the meantime, have a look at our unboxing and hands on photos here.

Is there anything in particular you’d like to know? Jot it down here, and we’ll answer it for you in our full Alcatel OT-980 review.

What are the warranty periods for this device

What is the os version and if it is not 2.2 how easy it is to upgrade?

    • bensillis

It's 2.1 – Alcatel would only tell me that it's “upgradeable”. But if you're after a feature set, this isn't for you. I'd be extremely surprised if this ever ran Flash for one thing.

How is the full review coming together?

    • bensillis

It's coming misza, sorry for the delay – it turned out to be a prototype sample we were sent by accident from Alcatel, sans Google apps, so we couldn't give it a fair review. A finished version is on the way very soon!

How is the review going Ben?

        • bensillis

We're just waiting on a final sample – should be arriving tomorrow or Monday. Sorry about Misza! Will be soon :)

I bought one of these a few days ago having bricked my G1 more then a few months ago and relying on dumbphones in the interrim.

It's nice, its solid, the keyboard is good, it seems to be smoother then my old G1 was, and android 2.1 is good.
Maps, GPS and apps are running fine – lots of things aren't turning up in the market, for some reason (such as Noiz2sa, the Beyondpod unlock key, some others i can't remember) but I haven't had any problems actually installing apps once I get them on it.

Appbrain works on it though, which helps sort that problem.

I really like, and as a cheap android phone it's pretty excellent so far.

Just bought one and it's going back. No way will this device attach to my pc. There is no OT 980 pc suite and after an afternoon of ringing them and downloading their otc 701 suite it still doesn't work.

    Failure!

    • bensillis

Does it not simply mount as a USB drive?

      • JG

No – tried it at work to and the teccies think it's a software issue.

  • Gandtrak

What is the Photo quality like on this phone, same or better than G1?

  • Sal

    Hi

When you plug in your phone via USB is there an option to connect as Mass Storage? If so, choose that and then watch as it appears as a drive in My Computer.

I bought an alcatel ot980 to replace an aging LG town. I bought the Alcatel in a second hand shop for £50 and was pleasantly surprised to find it had the android 2.1 os. Needless to say one happy bunny. 9months later still amazed at what it can do. The google maps and directions is more accurate than my satnav! Bonus. Alas I have dropped it too many times and now it is sick and needs attention. Stuck with a prehistoric sony ericsson K600 arghh. we have been spoilt!

It was a great little phone at launch for the money, I agree! It’s a shame portrait QWERTY Android phones have largely been forgotten about. If you can cope without buttons, the £60 Huawei Blaze is great value.

I hate my OT 980. I’ve only had it since Christmas but it will be getting replace next month. The battery has no staying power; it was fully charged last night but went flat after being on standby overnight.

The map function is rubbish. Trying to slide the map further across the screen invariably enlarges the image.

It will not readily connect to a pc. I don’t wish to download a file that needs another application to open it.

    Summary: Rubbish
