It was inevitable really. The latest PS3 jailbreak has been blocked by the latest PS3 firmware update. The patch that is currently being punted out by Sony is mandatory so if you want to keep hitting the PlayStation Network, you’ll need to grab it…

Only yesterday we were marvelling at the software from the PSJailbreak device ported onto a Nokia N900 but all that ingenuity is now pretty much useless. Sony’s PS3 firmware update 3.42 stops the PS3 Jailbreak tool from working. Colour us unsurprised.

Over on the PlayStation Blog, PS3 brand manager Mark Bowles explains: “A patch has been added to address a security vulnerability in the system software.” To install the PS3 3.42 firmware update you’ll need 168MB of free space on your PS3 hard drive.

The PSJailbreak dongle allowed you to run homebrew games and pirated code on the PS3. Sony managed to get it banned in Australia last week and an open source version slipped out onto the web yesterday.
