The LG Optimus family of smartphones and tablets is still something of a mystery, until the company whips the covers off at a launch event next week at any rate, but LG’s seen fit to drop one tantalising morsel of info before then. LG Optimus phones will pack Nvidia’s Tegra 2 system on a chip, and will be out before the end of the year: read on for what’s in store.
LG has announced today that Nvidia’s Tegra 2 mobile processor will power a series of LG Optimus smartphones, starting in the further quarter of this year (October to December). Nvidia’s Tegra chip was used to power gadgets like Microsoft’s Zune, while Tegra 2 promises dual core 1GHz processors and 1080p full HD video playback: you can see a demonstration of its graphical capabilities in the video below:
It’s not clear if the first announced LG Optimus phones, the Android LG Optimus One and Chic, and Windows Phone 7 Optimus 7, will use Tegra 2, but regardless, it looks like LG, which has kept a very low profile at the top end of the smartphone market so far this year, is about to make a triumphant return with one handset or more. Just one question: how’s the battery life going to turn out?
