Previously the Nike+ app needed the combo of a compatible iPod, iPod Touch or iPhone and a shoe sensor. But now you can dump the custom trainers and clip on sensor. The newly released Nike+ GPS app will measure your pace, distances and calories burned and track your routes with Google Maps. Read on for more details on the souped-up iPhone Nike+ app…

The new Nike+ app will play nice with the iPod touch (2G to current gen) but to get the new Google Maps skills you need to be packing an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4. The new feature means Nike+ is catching up with upstart rivals like RunKeeper (which costs £5.99 in its pro version but also has a free version).

Besides the Google Maps feature, the Nike+ app hooks up to the NikePlus online community, Twitter and Facebook so you can share your impressive workout stats or beg for support. It also comes with voice feedback, motivational messages from trainers and pro-athletes and the all-important PowerSong.

It’s great that the Nike+ app has ditched the need to grab special trainers or attach a sensor but you’ll still have to actually motivate yourself to pound the pavements. That’s sure to get harder as the nights begin to get darker and the rain gets more frequent.

The new Nike+ app for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch and, rather bizarrely, iPad is out now. It’ll set you back £1.19 from the iTunes App Store.
