Microsoft has kicked off its Windows Phone 7 marketing efforts with a cinema ad which announces “The Revolution is coming”.

If you have been wondering what Microsoft’s $1 Billion marketing spend for the Windows Phone 7 launch was actually going to pay for, the first ad for the new mobile phone platform has appeared. Shown during a Secret Cinema screening of Lawrence of Arabia, the ad shows a desert landscape with a dark shape approaching from the horizon, blurry and indistinct in the heat haze.

Is it Peter O’Toole, galloping out of the sun? Er, no. It is a generic looking, unbranded Windows Phone 7 Series handset which is.. sort of floating towards us.

The Windows Phone 7 device displays the words ‘The Revolution is coming..” in a vaguely Arabic script, then we get to see a little bit of the Windows Phone 7 user interface – complete with a picture of a sleeping cat.

We’re not sure if this ad will ever make its way to the small screen or if it was a one-off made for the Secret Cinema showing (Windows Phone 7 is a sponsor of Secret Cinema’s themed movie events) so if you want to see what the revolution supposedly looks like, check out the clip below..
