Since we first looked at the pirate-friendly PSJailbreak dongle for the PS3, things haven’t been going too well for the developers behind it. First, it has been ironically pirated itself and at least one importer has had a shipment seized by Australian customs officials. Now, someone has made an open source version of the hack that you can perform with the help of the Nokia N900.

PSFreedom is an open source version of the PSJailbreak program which normally requires a specialised USB dongle. The hack has now been reworked to run on a Nokia N900 (N810 and Palm Pre versions also exist, apparently). Some level of tech expertise is required and you need to fiddle around with the eject button while you boot – but this still looks pretty simple to do and will no doubt be giving someone at Sony a headache.

The video clip below is offered as proof that the hack works – although the person who made it was apparently so excited at the prospect of jailbreaking his PS3 that he forgot how to properly focus or even hold his video camera.

The problem of course, is that the PS3 keeps a online record of what games you play (as the trophycard gets updated).

So if you ever run the BackupManager and then connect to PSN, sony will know and permanently ban you console…

Until people start posting that they have been banned then sales of this device are going to rocket. It al depends on if this is a one off loop hole or some thing the hackers can keep ahead of.

Either way it's bagged Sony a load of headlines and has probably boosted their sales of hardware now people believe they'll be able to grab games for free. I don't think it's quite the head ache for Sony it's being made out to be.

    yay Nokia! ;)

Sony will probably have a mandatory update for new games that will circumvent this “hack”
