Dyson will be eyeing Abiko, a company that has ripped off the Dyson Air Multiplier, and is likely to end up in some sort of legal fisticuffs with the company. The fake version of the Dyson Air Multipler AM01 will set you back £145, saving you about £50 on the price of a genuine Dyson fan.
Dyson, understandably, aren’t too happy about it, but it’s not the first time Dyson has had to protect its intellectual property, patents and registered designs. Just a few weeks ago Dyson lost a case against Vax for design infringement.
A spokesperson for Dyson said: “The Dyson Air Multiplier fans were launched in 2009 after four years of research and development. A team of specialist Dyson engineers have refined and patented the technology: Illegal copies are of inferior quality. Dyson rigorously defends its intellectual property and treats any infringement very seriously. Dyson takes legal action against anyone who copies its technology.”
Abiko, the company who is also offering an Android tablet for under £100, was showing off its copycat to the Dyson Air Multiplier AM01 at Comex 2010 in Singapore.
Should Dyson weigh in and put the legal boot in, or does this sort of copycat manufacturing come with the territory with a strong brand like Dyson?
