New iPod nano rumours haven’t been nearly as prevalent as whispers about the new iPod touch or the refreshed Apple TV but a handful of new cases have sparked speculation. The bright plastic covers point to big changes with the new iPod nano including a square shape and the demise of the trusty clickwheel. But are they the legit? We’ve weighed up the evidence…
The purported new iPod nano cases come from Chinese case maker X-Doria. If they reflect Apple’s real plans for the new iPod nano, it would mean a major redesign moving away from the current model’s widescreen display. That seems like an odd move as the larger screen was introduced to complement the iPod nano video camera with a widescreen aspect ratio.
A change in shape for the new iPod nano could mean it will make use of the small mysterious Apple touchscreen which was spotted earlier this year. Shaw Wu, an analyst with Kaufman Bros, claimed yesterday that the new iPod nano will pack a smaller form factor and no click wheel.
The apparently leaked new iPod nano cases also include a large open strip at the back which could be there to allow for the camera or a built-in clip. Space for volume buttons and the power button can be seen on the top with space for the headphone jack and dock connector at the bottom.
We’re more than a little sceptical about these apparently leaked new iPod nano cases. Redesigning the iPod nano as a touchscreen device would irritate people used to using it for running or in the gym and downsizing the screen seems like an odd move. On the other hand, Apple has surprised us in the past.
We’ll be coming to you live from next week’s Apple event so you can expect to see extensive coverage on all the announcements right here. In the meantime, what do you make of this rumour? Would you like to see the new iPod nano arrive as a squared up, touchscreen machine? Or is the current form factor just fine as it is?
