Nike has teased us with them in the past but it really looks like the auto-lacing Nike Air Mag kicks from Back to the Future II could become a reality. Nike patent papers that appear to show Marty McFly’s oh-so-fly trainers ready to be made have been submitted and slipped out online. We’re just a little bit excited…

The Nike patent that’s popped up in a filing to the World Intellectual Property Organisation details how the automatically lacing system could really work. Nike says: “The automatic lacing system provides a set of straps that can be automatically opened and closed to switch between a loosened and tightened position of the upper…[and] an automatic ankle cinching system that is configured to automatically adjust an ankle portion of the upper.”

The comprehensive Nike patent details not just how the lacing system would work but the design of the kicks and a charging cradle for keeping them juiced up.

The Back to the Future trilogy is about to hit Blu-ray which seems like the perfect time for Nike to make the Nike Air Mag a reality. If it doesn’t put the patent into action soon, it’s got five years to get it done. Back to the Future II was set in 2015 after all.

You can see the Nike Air Mag kicks in action in the video clip below. We’re already putting aside the pennies for our own pair. Would it be too much to ask for a hoverboard to go with them?

I'd love to get a pair of those. Back to the future is one of my favorite movies!
