First Person Shooters are already under tabloid scrutiny after the decision to allow play as the Taliban in Medal of Honor drew criticism from the UK’s Defence Secretary. Call of Duty: Black Ops Developers Treyarch were asked if they had anything planned for their game that would provoke similar controversy. “Controversial is such a subjective term,” was the response.

GameZine spoke to Treyarch’s community manager Josh Olin about the upcoming first-person shooter. When asked if there was anything in the game that was as likely to provoke a reaction as MW2′s ‘No Russian’ airport massacre he replied,”It’s tough to say. It is a mature themed game for mature audiences and we’re not shying away from the brutality or grittiness of war. Capturing that level of authenticity and realism is important in trying to immerse the players.

“Anything we do will be to propel the story or elicit an emotional response from the player, to make them feel angry or righteous or sad. Those are all elements that help immerse the player that much more deeply into the world.”

Hmm. It isn’t exactly a denial, it it? In addition to the aforementioned Taliban multiplayer mode, Call of Duty: Black Ops is reportedly based around several real-life incidents – including the 1980 Iranian Embassy siege, that saw the SAS storm the London embassy following the murder of several hostages. So.. absolutely no possibility of controversy there, eh?

They'd be stupid not to cause controversy, with the response they get from people objecting to the content of the game they get priceless media attention.

If they don't put something in designed purely to upset those people who seem to live their lives solely for the purpose of being offended then they will have missed a fantastic opportunity.

    This is factually incorrect.
You DON'T play as the Taliban in Modern Warfare 1 or 2 (not even in multiplayer).
Also the Defense Secretary is complaining about the new Medal of Honor game, whch you CAN play as the Taliban in. They are trying to get Medal of Honor banned from release.

You don't play as the Taliban. You play as “opfor”. Opposition forces. You never have played as any real terrorist organisation in any call of duty ever. Learn the facts first.
And “No Russian” was a perfectly viable mission within the games context. The media, including yourselves, takes everything out of context to create controversy. How fitting…

i think that they should put in kids running away from gunfights and they get killed that would anger people a lot

If people get pissed about controversy the are stupid. Like it is said up there. It a a mature game for mature people. Don't you think people getting mad over small things is kinda Immature? So, the should just figure it out that it is for mature people. I myself can handle the concepts of the game and i am pretty sure that anyone who replies to this can.

this is the stupiedest thing ive ever heard our soldiers are out there dying and these people want to let you play as the people doing it. im not bying this game nor will i ever buy another trayarch or activision game. this is disgracefull!!

Actually, Jamie and Sebastian Giambrone: How about you learn your facts first? They clearly say that “First Person Shooters are already under tabloid scrutiny after the decision to allow play as the Taliban in Medal of Honor drew criticism from the UK’s Defence Secretary”.

    That's Medal of Honor referenced…not MW 1 or 2.
