Google Goggles is one of Android’s coolest exclusive apps – at the moment. Later this year it will become one of the coolest apps on Android and the iPhone.
Google Goggles is – if you have never seen it – a visual search tool for Google. You just take a pic with your phone camera, pass it to Google Goggles and it will use Google’s servers to analyse the photo and serve up data from a Google search.
The app can be used to identify landmarks and other physical objects. It can read barcodes and product packaging and direct you to an online store or company website and even do simple text translation. It isn’t perfect, but as Google continues to build up its image database it is improving all the time.
Google has confirmed that it is hard at work porting the app to the iPhone and will be submitting it to the App Store before the end of the year. There is no guarantee that Apple will allow the app through the App Store gates, of course.
