PS3 piracy plugin pirated

Categories: Gaming News   Tags: , , , ,

The PS3 ‘jailbreak’ device that will allow playing of pirated PS3 ROMs has itself been pirated and the creators of the original have been given a taste of what it must be like for games companies when their intellectual property is ripped off.

PS3Jailbreak is the first USB device that can hack the PS3′s firmware to allow the running of third party code and ‘back up’ game ROMs. The inventors of PS3Jailbreak announced the existence of the hack last week and were bent on selling the device and raking in a fortune from cheapskate PS3 owners.

In a twist so ironic that we may have to contact Alanis Morisette for comment, the PS3Jailbreak has been cloned by a Chinese electronics outfit, forcing the PS3Jailbreak crew to post a message on their blog reading “Beware of imitators and Chinese knock-offs, PS Jailbreak is the original solution, Buy original for warranty and support“.

While certainly bad news for the originators of the hack, this is almost certainly worse news for Sony and developers of PS3 titles, who now have to contend with many more cheap PS3Jailbreak kits on the market and a potential explosion in pirated PS3 games.

Perhaps if compaines didn't charge £40-£50 per game then people wouldn't be so wiling to pirate them?

Hopefully this will end the console cash cow for large gaming companies. Taking a look at the pricing for indenticle games across platforms there is a huge difference. PC's where piracy is rife and easier are constantly cheaper than the same game on consoles.

Piracy gives the consumer more power. Just look at the price of music and films now compared to a decade ago, and despite the big comapnies warnings there are still plenty of new acts making it through and new films being made.

£40 is good value for 20-30 hours gameplay. I have no problem with that. A game lasts me months. But then I'm careful what I buy and play them to PROPER completion (AKA Platinum).

£40 is hardly good value when you can get exactly the same game on a different platform at 25% less brand new. I tend to stick to the platinum collection or the secondhand games purely because of the prices. When you have kids who also like to play the occasional game you'll soon feel the pinch of paying a £10 “console tax”

Errm, PS3 and Xbox titles are exactly the same price dumbass. Nice try at conning people into thinking otherwise…

this is plain stupid and those who use it should be banned from PSN and marked somehow. So we know which players to ignore online! Or, SONY could give us their account details so we can rip them off too :)

    • MarkG123

You won't see them online, their PSN account and console will be permenently blacklisted. They would have to buy a new console and register a new PSN ID to actually get back online. The old console would be useless.

The only downside is that these same freetards/scumbags will try and sell their banned PS3 consoles in ebay to unknowning users.

“Buy original for warranty and support“

LOL, I can imagine the support… “Sony have blocked it, can I get my $150 back”, NO, go away

“My PSN account and console has been banned from online play, can you fix it”, NO, go away.

Really you would have to be a moron to buy/use one of these.

You do like to kiss Ass when it comes to Sony…The fact is the games are well over priced and always have been. The 360 has been hacked to death yet they sell more consoles and games. You will be telling us next sony were right to remove other os and backward compatibility

Who says Xbox sells more consoles and more games?

Did you know that PS3 outsold the Xbox by 2.2m units in 2009, and so far in 2010, it's outsold it by 3.3m units? Of course you didn't as you only like to read what the American gaming press want you to read.

Did you know that Microsoft titles are WAY down the list of earners compared to Sony titles? Of course you didn't..

Did you know that the attach rates of Xbox and PS3 are almost identical these days, despite the Xbox360 having 18months headstart to build that attach rate.

You your brain, and stop listening to US-Centric and cherry picked information.

  • PS3 – Owner

Lets be honest, sony have had a great run off the PS3 and this will boost hardware sales through the roof in time for xmas…

Its the publisher I feel sorry for…

You need to look back over the last decade or so to see what kind of impact a device like this will have.

It's up to you if you want to get petty and call people who use it names, but the choice of obtaining music, films and software for free forced the producers to act in the past and either reduce their prices or give you more for your money. Given the choice of losing money via piracy or making less of a profit than before, companies chose the latter. Now we can buy music and movies legitimately for a lot less, and we get more for our money in the way of extras and freebies when we buy the genuine product.

Right now if you buy a game on a PC, a platform where piracy is rife, you'll get at the very least a manual and quite often extras like collectors boxes, posters and books that make a game feel much more value for money. They had to do this as before long their product would be available free via torrent sites and dodgy traders at computer fairs, but the one thing that pirates can't do is copy the extras or make their products cheaper. Buy a console game however, and you don't even get a card most of the time showing you the key mappings, so secure are the developers that there is no way you can get their product cheaper so why give you anything more than bare minimum at the maximum price. This device will force companies to take a look at their pricing and marketing strategy. Xbox chipping is too complex to have had a big market impact, but a simple device like this that anyone can use, will send huge shockwaves thought the industry. They will never beat piracy once the genie is out of the bottle, but the result for legitimate gamers like us will be better value products and content.
