Fujifilm may be about to unleash a plague of terrible Avatar spoofs with the release of the FinePix Real 3D W3 – a compact camera capable of taking HD-quality 3D movies and 3D still photographs. Blue bodypaint not included.

The FinePix Real 3D W3 can record up to HD quality and output in a variety of 3D formats. For viewing both with or without glasses. It can record in stereo (it would be ironic if the sound was mono, really) and has built in HDMI output.

Fujifilm have also provided a solution to our initial thoughts about a 3D camera – where are we going to watch our new 3D flicks? The answer – at least until you shell out for a proper 3D telly – is on the back of the camera. The FinePix Real 3D W3 is equipped with a lenticular display like the one in the new Nintendo 3DS so you can playback in 3D without the need for glasses.

As well as outputting to video, Fujifilm say the camera is also compatible with a new lenticular still image printing process, due to launch later this year.

It shoots in 2D as well, of course, and the extra lens can be used in 2D mode to create special effects and shoot two shots of the same scene with different camera settings. HDR enthusiasts are going to love this one.

What I wanna know is, what happens when you turn the camera around to take a portrait?
I can guess that the lenses stay where thay are, the LCD on the back becomes 2d and the picture taken is invalid.
I can see how this would be solved with accelerometers and motors, or perhaps a control that rotates the induvidual cameras without the rest of the body, but this situation is not desirable
3D is impressive, but potrait is a necessity!

You can take a portrait picture — no problem — actually two at once — in 2D only.
