Oh look, the fact that Medal of Honor multiplayer will give you the option to play as the Taliban has reached Fox News. A mother who’s son was killed in Iraq took to the channel this weekend to slam EA’s decision. It fired back with a statement saying Medal of Honor multiplayer is no different from playing cops and robbers. Who’s right? Read on for more and hit the comments to have your say…

Modern Warfare 2 got folk fired up last year with its airport terror level and Medal of Honor clearly wants its own slice of tabloid ire. The option to play as the Taliban in multiplayer games was revealed a few weeks back but is only just getting the attention of the mainstream media.

Karen Meredith, a member of American activist group Gold Star Moms who lost her own son in Iraq, told Fox News: “War is not a game period. Right now we are going into a really, really bad time in Afghanistan…I just don’t see that a video game based on a current war makes any sense.”

The crux of her argument (which you can see in the video below) is that Medal of Honor shouldn’t feature a war that is currently being waged. She has no issue with games set in World War 2 like Call of Duty: World At War.

EA has released a statement defending the inclusion of the Taliban in the Medal of Honor multiplayer campaign. It says: “Medal of Honor is set in today’s war, putting players in the boots of today’s soldier. We give gamers the opportunity to play both sides. Most of us have been doing this since we were seven. If someone’s the cop, someone’s gotta be the robber, someone’s gotta be the pirate…in Medal of Honor multiplayer, someone’s gotta be the Taliban.”

Obviously EA’s argument doesn’t hold much sway with Meredith who points to the example of Six Days in Fallujah which was canned after public outcry about it’s topical and controversial setting.

Let us know what you think: is Medal of Honor right to include the Taliban perspective? Or should game makers stay away from controversial topics? Does EA’s cops-and-robbers defence cut the mustard?

Funny how these same US commentators wouldn't oppose a game featuring cowboys…

“press R1 to hand over blanket”

“Native American has now been infected. Mission complete.”

My initial reaction is one of disbelief and then revulsion; I'm no hawk but when my countrymen are on the battlefield (in my case Brits and Yanks), I want them to win. There *is* something different about portraying a current conflict: life is not a video game.

Saying that, I don't think there should be a law against making offensive art. EA can create whatever games it wants … but I don't have to like them.

It is just a game. No body is forcing you to buy it. personally i prefer to play as the americans over the taliban but if i been put in that team in multiplayer my team would be pissed off because i will team kill all the way. A game is a game. I'm 17 and i played the terrorist in MW2 doesn't bother me. The problem that is goig to be is the little kids that are going to play as the taliban furthermore they shouldn't be able to play the game it should be 18+ not a kid screaming down his mic. a game is a game if you don't like it don't buy it.

mw2 has arab content ,terroist content, wots the difference?,i know alot of soldiers brit/american,play these games to sharpen reactions etc,im sure they are not bothered wot uniform the enemy is wearing,it is current so what, think of older games desert storm, socom etc.its a game at the end of the day and has no reflection on the reality of iraq or afghanistan.medal of honour have always respected the armys or wars they depict.thats what makes them better than mw2,battlefield bad company and all the other copys.i hope this new one lives upto everyones expectations.

ya bitch but it is a game when your playing it on a console she needs to stfu, it's sad what happened but seriously she doesn't know crap

  • A Concerned Humanitarian

seriously…who cares? i think we have much bigger problems to be worrying about Karen. It's a video-game. Get over the fact that you can't do anything about it because they're not doing anything wrong. And you're OK with CoD: WaW but this war doesn't fit right? They're both wars, so make up your mind woman.
