The HTC HD2 is one mighty Windows Mobile phone, but as we said at its launch, it really should have been running Android. That’s no mere pipe dream however, and we’re not just talking about the upcoming HTC Desire HD: if you’ve got one these epic WinMo slates already, you can now install Android 2.2 Froyo on it quickly and painlessly. Read on to find out how.

We’ve seen hacked HTC HD2s running Android before, but it’s always been something reserved for codes and phone fiddlers only. Now though a quick and easy method, as detailed on TalkAndroid, has emerged, which loads a snazzy ROM of Android 2.2 Froyo. All that’s required is an SD card with 600MB of free space, the ability to open some named folders, and a willingness to void your warranty, which could leave you with a big bill should something go awry.

Still, this Android 2.2. Froyo installation procedure for the HTC HD2 looks pretty painless, and should certainly breathe a new lease of life into the phone, which still boasts top of the line specs, but a stale OS that even Microsoft has washed its hands of with Windows Phone 7.

Best Android apps of all time: Top 100

We’ve not attempted to install this Android 2.2 Froyo OS on a HTC HD2 ourselves, so proceed with caution, but if you do try, let us know how you get on in the comments below.

Works quite well, seems to use a fair bit of battery under use. Mind you that is probably because I am hammering the Android Market !

Crack on! Let us know how you find app installation on it.

    • bensillis

We've not tried this ourselves but by the looks of things, it's simply a case of restarting the phone. However, proceed at your own risk.

And running from an SD card. Brilliant. Amazong how one coder can do a better job than HTC and Google combined.

Had my HD2 over a year with no problems until I loaded the latest O2 rom form the HTC site – Freezing and system services crashing. Decided to give android a go, works like a dream. Had to update radio but whole process went smooth. Battery usage was bad though until I changed my mail retrieval settings.

    • bensillis

Good news! Does the camera and WiFi work?

      • Feralerick

I used everything from the xda developers site-updated the radio rom, loaded a hardspl, loaded the chuckyrom with the dual boot program and installed hyperdroid 1.5. In short-after about 30mins worth of reading and downloading, my HD2 is frickin' awesome! I'm able to switch between winmo6.5 (chuckyrom) and android 2.2 with froyo at will. The battery drain isn't bad, the phone works, the camera, wi-fi, tethering, bluetooth-all working just fine! I can download international apps and everything! Not to mention that I can still run winmo6.5 with all of the regular htc features and office mobile 2010! definitely worth the time!
