Sony Ericsson planning a PSP phone is one of the hardy perennial tech rumours. It rolls around at least once a year but this time there are some decidedly solid details coming out about a tie-up between Sony Ericsson and Google to create an Android 3.0 Gingerbread PSP phone. Excited? We sure as hell are…
The red hot rumour is that the Sony Ericsson Android 3.0 PSP Phone is deep into development with Google lending a hand in the hope that the new device will kick gaming on Android to the next level.
No images of the Sony Ericsson PSP Phone have been revealed but it’s described as a cross between the Samsung Galaxy S and the PSP Go. The controls apparently include a D-pad, a long touch pad and standard PSP and shoulder buttons.
The PSP phone will apparently come packing a seriously large screen (up to 4.1in), a 5MP camera and a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU to get things skipping along.
The description of the Sony Ericsson PSP Phone prototype looks sounds pretty appealing too. The handset is apparently mostly clad in black with silver highlights and white/silver gamepad.
The version of Android 3.0 Gingerbread on the Sony Ericsson PSP Phone will apparently come with a phone-specific skin, a kind of gaming-focused version of the Rachel UI we saw on the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10.
Sony Ericsson PSP Phone’s arrival will coincide with the opening of a new games area on the Android Market. Titles will reportedly be restricted to the new phone initially but other Android phones with compatible specs and hardware set-ups will eventually be able to get in on the action.
Games for the PSP Phone will reportedly draw on classic Playstation and PSP titles with God of War, Call of Duty and LittleBigPlanet all getting a name check. There’s also talk of new games with augmented reality baked in which suggests the PSP Phone will come packing an accelerometer and gyroscope too.
Android 3.0 Gingerbread is due to arrive in October and the Sony Ericsson PSP Phone could also pop up as soon as then. We’ve got our fingers-crossed that we do see it then and that it doesn’t turn out to be this generation’s N-Gage.
Hit the comments and let us know: would you snap up a Sony Ericsson PSP Phone packing Android 3.0? What features and, more importantly, games would you most like to see?
