Microsoft has geared up for the back-to-school PC buying season with a new page slamming Macs and promoting PCs. With Mitchell and Webb (and their transatlantic cousins Hodgman and Long) retired from the I’m A Mac ads, it seems Microsoft is feeling a little bolder. Prepare to be enraged Apple fans…

The new Microsoft site, PC versus Mac, features a pensive looking woman (no doubt perturbed by the idea that you might pick up a Macbook Pro) and a series of tabs detailing just why Apple isn’t the answer.

Some of the points Microsoft makes are factual: “You can’t get a Mac that ships with a Blu-ray player, TV tuner, Memory Stick reader or built-3G wireless. You can with PCs running Windows 7”.

But Microsoft puts forward some arguments that will have Apple lovers fuming. It claims that Macs “don’t work as well at work or school” and that “Macs don’t like to share”.

There’s lots of other fodder for fan boy fights from the fact that PCs come in different colours to the lack of a touchscreen iMac. In laying out it’s case on the PC versus Mac site, Microsoft leaves no stone unturned.

It’s good to see Microsoft fighting its corner but its lists of reasons why PCs rule and Macs suck aren’t quite as entertaining as Apple’s ads. If you’ve got your heart set on a Mac in your search for the best laptop, this site isn’t likely to change your mind.

Take a gander at the PC versus Mac site for yourself and let us know where you stand. Is Microsoft taking the right approach? With PC sales still dwarfing Mac take up, does it need to defend itself so vigorously?

I'm amazed at some of Microsoft's wording here… it's a bit shonky. “The mouse works differently” – err, no it doesn't. If you right click, it right clicks… if you point at something and double click, it opens the file… In fact, if you buy a Mac Mini you're encouraged to use your old “Windows mouse” not that, strictly speaking, there is such a thing.

Also “Memory Stick readers” aren't present on all PCs either, assuming we're discussing Sony's memory format. If we're talking about memory cards in general, then MacBooks, MacBook Pros, iMacs and Mac Minis all have SD card readers… This seems very weak on Microsoft's part.

if we're nitpicking, MacBooks actually don't. but it's still an awful argument on Microsoft's part.

They miss out the general cost comparison. Most PC's are a lot cheaper. Fan boys aregue it isn't but once you point out that people like Dell include an onsire 3 year warranty it sson beats Apple hands donw
