froyo dell streakDell Streak owners: you won’t be getting Froyo in September, you’ll be getting a 2.1 firmware release of Android 2.1 Eclair instead. This confirmation comes after rumours that the Dell Streak would be getting the 2.1 update “early next month”. Fear not though, as the 2.1 update brings some welcome improvements.

The 2.1 Dell Streak update brings pinch and zoom to maps, a heavy revamp on the camera app, and  the addition of Android’s default gallery app that links up to Picasa as well. Dell Streak users will also be happy to hear that the firmware update also fixes the remote control bug.

A spokesperson for O2 said: “O2’s software testing team is currently working on bringing Android 2.1 Eclair to our Dell Streak customers as soon as possible. We expect this to be available in September and will update our customers once the new software is available.”

So still no official line on when Froyo might arrive for Dell Streak users on O2, but those with an unlocked Dell Streak appear to be getting updates first, and so we’ll be looking to the unlocked ones for signs of the Froyo update.

Hi well i for one am disappointed an upgrade to 2.1 will really make very little difference unlike an upgrade to 2.2 Froyo would make. If Dell said they would upgrade to 2.2 in September I'd like to know why this has now changed and how soon they expect to get it to the Streak as along with shortages and still no US release Dell really seem to be doing there best now to screw this up.

OK so nothing else may have a 5″ screen and it may also be one of the best screens I've seen in sunlight but none of this excuses the lack of the promised update so if something with a 4.3″ screen does arrive soon with the newer OS version i may well say goodbye to my Streak after all.
