Microsoft is working on some new hardware but rather than sending out a press release and a nice clear picture of its new, apparently touch-sensitive tech, it’s doling out fragments of a photo on Twitter. The @msfthardware account has so far revealed two pictures which we’ve pieced together. But what is this mystery Microsoft device?

Putting the photo fragments of the mystery Microsoft device together, it looks a little like a smartphone. Microsoft hasn’t announced plans for an own-brand Windows Phone 7 handset but this could be its own Nexus One-style proof-of-concept tech.

The fact that the @msfthardware account is dedicated to promoting mice, keyboards and other peripherals counts against the Microsoft-branded Windows Phone 7 phone theory as does the company’s recent painful experience with the Kin.

Another option could be a Windows 7 tablet. Steve Ballmer recently hinted that Microsoft could be building its own hardware as well as poking and prodding partners to get their own slates out in the wild.

But the only other hint offered by @msfthardware has offered up seems to point to something else entirely: “Don’t be so touchy…flat is where it’s at.”

Could the mystery Microsoft product be a refresh for the Zune HD ahead of the new iPod touch arriving in September? Or even, while we’re on the subject of Apple aping, a Microsoft take on the touchpad smarts offered by the Magic Trackpad? Since @msfthardware is preoccupied with peripherals that would make sense.

Looks like a Windows Phone 7. The MS logo would be too large if it was a tablet (right?)
