After spending most of the weekend jabbing the update button like my life depended on it, I wasn't dissapointed by the end result.

It's great having full flash support as it opens up a ton of websites. As I watch most stuff online or on demand, having access to things like 4OD and iPlayer is brilliant and a big part of why I went for Android over iPhone.
The Wifi hotspot and iTunes support is less of a draw for me although damn usefull and will no doubt prove usefull someway down the line.

The speed increase is also welcome and the phone is now noticeably more responsive when navigating, screen flipping and opening apps.

Once more developers code their apps to run from the SD card it will near perfection.

I gave the 720P recording a try and was suitably impressed, it was noticeably sharper and ran smoothly.

Just now waiting for native DiVx support although Rockplayer is perfectly adequate.

I got froyo 2.2 after manually looking for updates last night.
Now have 720p, landscape orientation both ways, apps on SD card (hardly any can be moved over yet tho). Haven't tried htc sync and I don't use itunes. The OS generally feels quicker, as does internet.
Two minor annoyances: 25mb free memory needed for install (delete some apps) – could have told me this before I attempted to install.
2nd: updated over wifi, when I came off wifi, mobile internet (gsm) would not connect. Power off and on did not solve. This morning, still didn't connect to gsm until I reset the APN to default. Bit weird, although it could have been the fault of an app I suppose.

    • fel

      Hi Chandler,
THe same happened to me but figured out is not an app error. The update switches of your mobile internet. So you have to go to settings and tick the box to get it back. It might also have deleted your APN data…and if you did not take notes you can contact your network provider so they can supply those details for you.
      Good Luck.
      Fel.

      install 'terminal emulator'
start this and type: 'pm setInstallLocation 2'
This enables most of the apps to bemoved to SD, eventhou the developer of the app did not configured this while packing the APK file.

  • novak84

Yeah got the update last night, as Collen stated it would be good if the installer tells you beforehand that you need 25mb free.

    x. Ok all installed, the battery seems to be better.
    x. I haven't noticed the improved keyboard, seems the same to me.
    x. Google and News is updated
    x. You can now use your phone as a wi-fi hotspot with security
    x. Browser appears quicker and loads flash (stick that in your cakehole apple).
    x. iPlayer now works (sends you to the mobile version) nice and smooth playback
    x. Google Voice search works
    x. Calendars now shows my corporate google calendar
    x. App Sharing lets you send links to your mates about apps you find useful.
    x. FB calendar integration works better

That's all i have found up to now. Really impressed with my HTC desire and android!

  • Unimpressed

I have updated. Overall, perhaps it is running a little smoother, quicker, but can't really tell much difference. Scrolling used to be a little stuttery, it's better in the programs menu but I still notice it in the Facebook App.
    Disappointments:
    - Copy/Paste in Gmail app. It's pathetic, honestly…
    - Google contact information – user birthdays still displaying ONE DAY EARLIER. Go into edit it to fix the date, but no the date is correct. No fix for this?
    - Email client is still not Push compliant. Again, this is pathetic. It is not a great ask for this to be basic out of the box functionality.
Overall, aside from speed increases which are quantatively negligible, Android 2.2 release o my Desire has disappointed me for not addressing/fix existing bugs that already existed or sorting out what I consider to be the most basic functionality.

    • baz

any one know how i download my updatesfor my htc desire im on 3 network and its consistintly saying no sofware updates

  • Nick

I'm on vodafone and still waiting for the update, I hope it comes out soon! I want the 720p video function :(

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_CW25KIL53LAXDTULYYLUJXSVRA Nick

Updated last night. Other than losing half my photos and the cover art on my music being mixed up I not noticed any major problems. Flash is great. Landscape mode both ways is a good improvement. However I am disapointed that my camera seems to be the same and the Gallery hasn't changed??

  • http://twitter.com/LovelyBlobby Mr Blobby

Waiting for T-Moble release… Will it fix the scratches from trying to tale pics while eating pizza? Note: phone tends to explode in pieces when dropped from 3 feet!

  • Rohitf

I live in Dubai though I bought my phone in the UK. Had to manually check for the update. The update was smooth and flawless yesterday…no change in settings, contacts etc (in fact was initially disappointed since the look and feel were the same).
    Minore niggles:
You need to enable Auto Sync before using Market (otherwise it force closes).
Webpages seem to load slower and web scrolling is a little stuttery (maybe because of Flash 10 and a paltry 1mbps connection).
The dual landscape orientation is a little irritating..the slightest nudge and bang.

    Good news stuff:
My calendar fills up with birthday updates but that's good
The new Google search GUI looks more elegant (though voice search is a little iffy)
The LED option in camcorder is quite nifty
Haven't used App Share but my mates all have iphones
Navigation would be useful as well (need to get a dock for that)

All in all a good buy (the Desire) and HTC lived up to its commitements on Froyo…

    • Steph

      Hi,
I also ordered my phone frm uk and using dubai sim. But i have not yet got the update :(
      Mine is unlocked from Virgin.
How did u check for the update?

  • Chakycool

I got it about 18hours ago from now. Took some time to update but it's great. Have to wait for my apps to update for the option to move them all to SD card.

    • Lt 2000

Please tell me how did you get the option to move apps to SD card?

      • Rana

Hi, to get this option go into menu/settings /applications/ manage applications, then select the app you wish to transfer, you will be given the option to move the app to SD card or vice versa.howeve app can only be transferd if the develops not enabled this.e

  • Phil

Yup – it's OK, everything looks the same as before, slight increase in speed ( but not as much as people have reported ), couple of extra goodies ( 720p video, Flash etc. ).
Am I happy to have it? – Yes.
If I had to pay for the upgrade, would I ? – No.

  • As

    The update certainly improves responsiveness.

One real disappointment is the continuing lack of Bluetooth connectivity for BT keyboards. Every BT keyboard I've tried so far doesn't work with Desire/Froyo. I'd have thought this would be a no-brainer, but apparently not so…

  • joemmo

same issues with free memory prior to install and 3g data connection but otherwise hitch free. Overal impression is more polish on the UI, generally a bit faster and smoother and some new widgets but only 7 of my installed apps could be moved to SD. Hopefully developers will start supporting that now there are more 2.2 devices out there.

BBC iplayer is accessed through the browser but if you add a browser shortcut to a homescreen it has a custom iplayer icon which is a nice touch. Haven't tried the tether yet but I recommend installing chrometophone – very nice bit of functionality to send shortcuts from pc straight to your device.

  • madeinengland

have got froyo and i think my htc desire is noticably faster.

anyone been able to sync with itunes? if so how did you do it? as i've not managed it yet.

  • fel

I've got to be honest, I think I expected a lot more but still I think we're getting enough for now!
Mainly, the improvements are internet oriented (I can open any site you can think of!! and and can't beleive the quality of HD video I get on 3G from BBC iplayer…full screen!!).
Although I have 720p HD, it's pretty unstable and the video gets pixelated very often also still it freezes. I like the 3D menu style of Nexus1…we did not get here apparently.
As some said most of the apps can't be transfered to SD card yet?
Overall I'd say I'm very satisfied but hope we get some more in future updates.
    Cheers Guys!
    Fel

  • Chris Pratt1

My 3g data connection stopped working after the foyo update now only wireless works

    • Swishisfresh

      MINE TOO!!!.. WHAT THE HELL

    • Swishisfresh

      Have you found a fix?

  • Thiti

i havent got the update yet, screw you HTC
btw i live in taiwan, where HTC's headquarter is,
god damn it, i want my froyo~!!!!!

    • Lt 2000

Don't swear. You've been lazy. Go to the phone: Menu>Settings>About phone>System software updates>Scheduled check (thick box) >Check now. Say SORRY if it works.

      • hmph..

It's not there yet. Any asian HTC desire is not yet updated. I'm one of those unfortunate ones who haven't received any update. And YES, I've been pressing the manual 'check now' button for more than a week now.. and mind you I check almost every hour. I emailed HTC, and of course the reply is just a generic “oh, were trying our best to roll it out”.. I think it's unfair.

  • Rana

Although I'm very impressed with the froyo I have noticed a few issues.

1 – when on a flash enabled website with video play on double tapping the screen the video will not go into full screen mode, video just expands ever so slightly. Before double taping the screen allowed video to go in to full screen mode .

2 – let's say you clear your browser history (standard browser) and then use a task killer app to end the running app, if you click into the browser and select the back key it will take you your earlier page. Again before the update you could clear history then end browsers app using advanced take killer , go back into the browser and start a fresh browsing session. It seems as if you cannot kill the app in the same way.

    3. Is it me or battery life has depreciated ?

    4. Sometimes… ok twice I have had experienced this issue – when replying to a text I have noticed that the text recipient has changed….WHAT THE HELL?

Other then above everything is good …have u guys had similar issues ?

    • bensillis

Curious glitch there. I shouldn't worry about closing the browser or not – there's much debate as to whether task killers are beneficial on Android or not.

    • Dean D

I have had problems when replying to texts while on 2.1! You click on a contact to open their messages only to find when the conversation opens it's of a different contact nowhere near the one you selected. Annoying to hear it's not fixed in 2.2.

  • http://techspalace.blogspot.com/ Techs Palace

got it yesterday. Unlocked phone using in Nepal/Asia

  • http://techspalace.blogspot.com/ Techs Palace

but of course no 3d menu.

  • Ungchieng

I have updated my HTC Desire to android 2.2. But one thing made me disappointed is that internet tethering is not working with laptop as before as my HTC Desire Android 2.1. Can you help me to find the solution.

    Regards

  • Kevin

Wanted Froyo for the app sharing with SD card. That part works OK – shame that only a few of my apps will port over to the SD card – but it has blitzed my internet browser and e-mail retrieval from my several e-mail accounts. I reset the APN information for my provider (3 in UK), and the e-mail came back up, but still no internet access. The browser process crashes before it can get anywhere near launching. Waiting for further APN info from 3 to see if this fixes the problem.

Otherwise, agree with some of the comments below – can't see any major speed or battery improvements. Other than that, will eagerly try the iPlayer and still very happy with the Desire overall – brilliant phone and can only get better with more on-board memory (shipped from HTC with 2GB, which is nowhere near enough !! Got a 16GB microSD card as well, but everything already filled up with apps & music. IMO, such a high-end phone should have at least 16GB internal memory – Nokia do it, why not HTC ? 32GB and 64GB microSD cards are still relatively expensive.

    • Gadgets

Agree about the HTC memory. Had 2x Nokia X6 before getting HTC Desire (after reading Tech Radar rating… best move I ever made.) and 16GB internal memory was fantastic, however both phones faulty with the same problem so returned them for a Desire. I have 3 network and have had no problems with the internet since the update. I have lost the three (Hutchin) website but will soon put that right. I also did a factory reset after the update. One big point is why have they removed Privacy. I have my contacts backed up but can't find it to restore. Do we have to email the software developers on Android Market begging them to put a feature to save software to SD card. Only a few so far (as in 5) can move to the SD card. Still love my Desire but wish these issues are sorted out.

      • Kevin

Update : 3 tech support could only talk me through resetting the APN settings to default which I had already trie. Thnx for trying guys, but not much help. Factory reset cleared the problem, but took a few hours to re-configure phone and DL apps again etc. afterwards. Frustrating, but all working OK now. Desire is still an awesome phone :-) .

  • Mrmichaelsewell

Downloaded it but wish I hadn't its messed up watching videos on my phone no more full screen by double tap what a load of s***. Bin waiting months for this update and it does nothing. Still no video edit feature the keyboard is sooo laggy now no pic folder option is pooh. And wow 720p woppee f***ING doo thanks for killing my desire that little bit more android.

  • Mrmichaelsewell

What's the point in having a forum if every time I write down how the update stops foiled top and viewing full screen video you delete it !!! Don't like freedom of speech or what ? Dint get update if you. Own a HTC desire and like video. no more double tap.

  • docpratt

Got the 2.2 update, but hate what they have done to the keyboard. Bring it back!

  • Jkevens

Major bug with Pop email – if you receive an email , read it, exit the email app, then go back in, within a few seconds all emails in your inbox vanish. This is not good. I have already lost some emails I intended to keep and have had to delete my account to avoid deleting any more.
Very Bad. Hope it can be fixed.

    • Bulman

I have exactly the same problem now. Wish i'd stayed with 2.1 as at least e-mail & web browsing is stable. eg, forced close on certain websites such as BBC news when clicking on certain stories such as ‘Vettel’s errors ‘rule out title’. Have you managed to resolve the e-mail issue yet? If so please explain how?

      • Bulman

This is what I got from HTC below & it appears the hard reset resolved e-mail issues. Just the odd web page issue which I guess everyone must be getting, but I can live with that for now.

Thank you for your enquiry about your handset. This could be a software issue and we recommend to try a hard reset on it make sure that you back up all your data before the reset. If the problem still going on after this then contact us on +44 8458900079 to send this device for a repair and downgrade to 2.1 OS. I trust that this resolves your query, please do not hesitate to contact us again if required

        Sincerely,

        Richard

  • rexted

I'm on T-mobile and still waiting for the update!! I hope I'll soon get it!

  • Vm

Hi , I have an unlocked unbranded HTC Desire…..still no update available…..

  • vai

    Minus points:
Lost my apn settings after install
Downloaded videos no longer appear in my gallery
HTC sync to pc no longer works, lots of fails reported
The minimise keyboard icon is missing when typing in portrait mode

    Plus points:
    Flash
    Torch
    Contact issues resolved
    Video mode better

Why does my pc sync keep failing now ?

    • Smithh

I am having the same issue. HTC Sync worked fine with 2.1. Now 2.2 connects but can sync get error message “no handset connected” I have raised a ticket with HTC. Will keep you posted

  • BizzE3

Anyone have any idea why the internet app would stop working with the update? wifi is fine, but app forces close.
Other than this the update seems great.

    • bensillis

Really? That's unfortunate, haven't seen this happen yet.

    • Ed

I had this problem. Clearing the browser cache solved it.

  • Ptr79

Since the update I've noticed I can no longer connect to the internet via mobile network :@

    • bensillis

Oh my. That is unfortunate. Have you phoned your network up? That shouldn't be happening.

    • Ed

Indeed, it seems all APN settings are lost after the upgrade. You just need to set them up again (you probably can't send MMS messages either.)

  • Rainbowscotia

got my update yesterday. a bit peed off they got rid of the ! and the ? from the mobile keyboard. that was one of the things i loved about it.
no i player or i tunes

  • KayCee

I just bought an HTC Desire and 2 days ago was sent a software update to download – since doing this I have lost wifi – keeps showing as 'error' – I have reset APN and still nothing. I'm reluctant to reset to factory settings as I'll lose the aps I've taken ages to find! Any ideas??

    • bensillis

You could transfer your apps to the sd card and take it out maybe?

    • rasca

i have the same problem. We need help to solve it. Maybe reinstalling the ROM…
