Apple has shot down speculation that the iPhone 4 antenna issue might be sorted by a software fix. Several reports including one from the New York Times had offered up the theory. But Steve Jobs slammed the idea and the media during the iPhone 4 press conference. So if you were hoping for a downloadable patch to match the free cases, you’re out of luck.

Update: Steve Jobs says Apple will “review” the situation on September 30 suggesting free cases for iPhone 4 owners could be on the cards for longer.

Though Apple has said that the iPhone 4 antenna issue is a problem faced by every other phone manufacturer, it has just announced its solution. Every iPhone 4 owner will get a new iPhone 4 case. It may not be a Bumper. Steve Jobs said Apple is struggling to produce enough of its own brand case but will “source some cases and give you a choice”. Steve Jobs opened the iPhone 4 press conference telling the crowd: “We’re not perfect. Phones aren’t perfect. But we want to make all our users happy. If you don’t know that about Apple, you don’t know Apple.
