We love
Rock solid and sturdier than the Great Wall of China
We hate
Feels very chunky, kink at bottom of device, could do with fewer lines
Verdict
Feels like a brick, is as solid as a breeze block, but shows Motorola doesn’t do flimsy
Launch Price
££359.99
The first Motorola Milestone was never going to win any awards for its rather fulsome design and its sad to say the Motorola Milestone XT720 falls into the same category. That’s not to say it doesn’t have any winning points, just that you’ll need plenty of room to stash this slab of Android magic. Read our Motorola Milestone XT720 review: design and build and we’ll tell you just what’s what when it comes to this blowers looks.

As we said in our Motorola Milestone XT720 review: overall verdict, this is not a phone that comes in small, or one that could ever be accused of being a size zero waif. On the contrary, this phone wouldn’t feel out of place with some much older, heftier handsets. At 160g, it’s 23g heavier than the iPhone 4, a mobile known for having some real weight when you pick it up. Much like its predecessor, this means it’s rather cumbersome to carry and feels a lot bigger than its 10.9mm girth would suggest.
Then there’s the rather odd protrusion on the bottom left hand corner, which your eye cannot but help be drawn to. It really detracts from what should be a straight forward candybar design. Yes, it’s aim is to impress upon you that this is as much a camera as it is phone (which is actually true), but all it does is ruin the straight lines and simple style that Moto was apparently aiming for.
All this chunkiness does have an upside though. It’s almost impossible to find a phone on the market, short of a Sonim toughphone, that feels as rugged as the Motorola Milestone XT720. Its metal trim and even its blue plastic battery cover are stunningly solid. You can easily slate Motorola for forgetting what a sexy phone looks like, but there’s no doubting that it knows the deal when it comes to making devices that can withstand a bit of a battering. we wouldn’t advise dropping this cell onto a concrete floor, but it certainly has the skills to keep working after its been given a thorough work out.
If you want a phone for its looks as well as its features, then the Motorola Milestone XT720 isn’t the mobile for you. The iPhone 4, HTC Desire and Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 all manage to combine beauty and brawn a lot better with similar-sized screens. However, if you’re prone to gadget-based clumsiness but are still jonesing for an Android fix, then this might well be the phone you’ve been looking for.
