The Kindle iPhone and iPad app has had an update following the new Kindle. The 2.2 Kindle app update adds a full dictionary to match the feature added in the recent iBooks update as well as clutch of new tweaks that make flipping through the virtual pages more pleasant…

When you highlight a word in the updated Kindle app, you’ll get the definition at the bottom of the page. If that brief explanation isn’t enough, you can hop through to a longer one from the Oxford American Dictionary that comes bundled with the app. Sadly, there’s no option to switch it for an English dictionary.

As well as giving you the option to get dictionary definitions within the Kindle app, there are also links to jump to Google or Wikipedia to investigate further. However, choosing them chucks you out of the app and into Safari.

Other improvements include better line spacing for reading ebooks in the iPad version of the Kindle app and fast app switching for iOS 4 on the iPod touch and iPhone. You can also now search within books on the Kindle app, another feature that was already added to iBooks.

iBooks are really expensive and the selection is limited whilst Kindle's store is in $'s and again aren't any cheaper than an actual book on amazon! They're both pretty crap and unless I see any big changes I won't be using either! Free books are of course ideal and Project Gutenberg gives you access to hundreds of volumes but the paid for versions aren't there yet in any way!
