Virgin Media is taking on the iPlayer, and the ITV Player, and 4OD… and Demand Five, for that matter. Say hello to Virgin Media Player, bringing on-demand TV from the cable giant to a PC near you!

Packed with “hundreds of hours of content” from Virgin Media’s XL bundle, the Virgin Media Player is still branded as a beta product, but offers up programmes from ITV, LIVING, Disney, Cartoon Network, National Geographic and MTV UK and Ireland.

Comedy Central and Nickelodeon are on board too, putting shows like South Park, Jersey Shore, Dora the Explorer, SpongeBob Squarepants and The Hills onto Virgin Media Player.

Initially, Virgin Media Player is only available to Virgin Media’s XL TV customers who also have a Virgin Media broadband connection. They can tap into it by pointing a browser at virginmedia.com/player.

But Virgin Media Player doesn’t stop being interesting when you walk away from your PC. Virgin Mobile pay monthly customers can also watch an hour of Virgin Media Player on their mobile phones at no extra charge.

Virgin Media Player on mobile will launch with 4oD content, along with MTV Snax, a made for mobile channel, with short shows such as Cribs, The Hills and Nitro Circus

Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and MTV Music will also be available on Virgin Media Player mobile.

Virgin Media says its on-demand TV player will lose its Beta label later this year, in time for a full launch before 2011.
