Talk of the Blackberry tablet has been rattling round the RIM rumour factory for months. Now news that RIM has registered a new web domain has kicked off speculation that the Blackberry tablet could follow the convention set by the iPad and arrive as the Blackpad. Could RIM really go with that name?
A domain detective using WHOIS has discovered that RIM snaffled up the Blackpad.com domain a few days ago. The address had been under the control of other owners since January 2002 so the fact that the Blackberry maker has gobbled it up now as Blackberry tablet rumours grow could be significant.
Blackpad has been rumoured as a possible name for the Blackberry tablet for some time though many believe it was simply a codename. The penchant for plonking the -pad suffix on new tablets is also thought to have infected HP with whispers that its forthcoming webOS tablet could be the PalmPad.
There’s also a good chance that RIM has grabbed the Blackpad domain because it knows any Blackberry tablet is likely to get lumbered with that nickname anyhow. Getting hold of the address could also simply be a matter of ensuring it isn’t poached by competitors or squatters. After all, the name hardly fits with the pattern set by products like the Blackberry Bold and Blackberry Pearl 3G.
What do you think? Would the Blackpad be a good name for the Blackberry tablet? Or does it just sound too ridiculous?
