HTC is reacting to high demand for large screen smartphones by moving into Super LCD (SLCD) displays. For now, it’s just the HTC Desire and Nexus One that will be switching up to SLCD, but it looks like there will be more to come.
“HTC is experiencing high-demand for many of our phones, specifically our phones with 3.7 inch displays. The new SLCD display technology enables us to ramp up our production capabilities quickly to meet the high-demand,” said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation.
The switch up comes in reaction to OLED shortages, which threaten to slow down HTC’s massive growth rate. SLCD has five times better power management than earlier LCD panels, which isn’t quite the same thing as using five times less power. HTC isn’t raving about the switch, and says the screen change aims to give a “comparable visual experience” to current display screens. Not better. Comparable.
A spokesperson for HTC said: “SLCD is the latest generation of LCD technology. It’s got improved IPS, (in-plane switching) which gives SLCDs a wider viewing angle, meaning you can look at the screen, and still see everything clearly when looking at it from lots of different directions.”
The new screens will be used on the HTC Desire and Nexus One later in the summer, and it sounds like more models will be in the pipeline soon enough.
