Twitter fell over so much during the World Cup it seemed like it was angling for a transfer to Seria A. But now the social network is set up a gear and move to its own dedicated data centre. It means that at long last, Twitter should be able to end the frustrating voyage of the Fail Whale for good…

In a seriously detailed post on the Twitter Engineering Blog, engineer Jean-Paul Coztazzi throws out a pretty mind-blowing stat: Twitter has seen an average of 300,000 new accounts being added every day during 2010. Granted plenty of those will be taken up by those delightful bots promising to enlarge our anatomy or introduce us to women of ill-repute.

Coztazzi says keeping up with all that growth makes tweaking Twitter like “ building a rocket in mid-flight”. Taking possession of its own data centre rather than relying on suppliers alone as it has done so far will make it a lot easier for Twitter to expand capacity during busy periods. For comparison, Facebook only announced its own data centre back in January.

Though the move to its new data centre digs isn’t happening until later in the year, Twitter will be adding extra capacity to its current arrangements over the next few days.
