Toshiba Media Controller for iPhone just broke cover, and even if you don’t own any Toshiba kit, it’s an awesome app giving iPhone owners an ultra-simple way to bounce music, videos and photos from one device to another without ever touching a PC.
It’ll even turn your iPhone or iPod touch into a DLNA server, ready to fling photos from its image library to other devices around the house.
The neat Toshiba Media Controller app also works on iPads (although it’s not a universal app, so expect it to be ‘blown up’ by the iPad’s screen). Tapping into it lets you send media from one device to another, as long as they’re on the same Wi-Fi network, as well as offering up your iDevice’s own content to be accessed into by other gadgets around the house.
At present, Toshiba Media Controller for iPhone is limited to sharing still pictures from the iPhone’s library, so while you can show your iPhone’s camera roll on the TV without wires, there’re DRM restrictions to stop videos or music being sent the same way. That said, there’s a neat way to select only the photos you want to share, rather than offering up your entire image library.
Other kit can send video or audio just fine, with Toshiba Media Controller pulling their strings remotely. You can even create playlists of different content to then push towards a DLNA compatible receiving device.
The Toshiba Media Controller iPhone app is free from the iTunes app store right now. Read more about it at the Toshiba Life blog.
