Gears of War 3 promises several new innovations for the series – playable female characters, mech suits, four player co-op – and possibly the gimmickiest gimmick yet devised for videogame marketing: Death by T-shirt.
Fans of the Gears of War games will be familiar with the Carmine family. One Carmine brother has been killed in each game to date – Anthony in 1, little brother Ben in 2 – but it seems that the Carmine’s have not suffered enough.. or have they?
A third brother, Clayton Carmine, has signed up for military service by the time Gears of War 3 comes around. Will Mrs Carmine be getting another blood-soaked letter from the front? The decision is up to you. Providing you use Xbox LIVE and can be bothered buying a t-shirt for your avatar, that it.
Two shirts will shortly be going on sale on LIVE. Dress your avatar in “Save Carmine” and Clayton will live to fight again. Opt for “Carmine Must Die” and, well, it’s not looking good for Mrs Carmine’s youngest. (At least, we assume he is the youngest. For all we know, the Carmines are knocking out kids left right and center – just doing their bit to keep the humans in cannon fodder.)
Silly idea it may be, and we are fairly confident that we know how this will play out (sorry Carmine. It’s been nice knowing you) but Epic have announced that all proceeds from the t-shirt sales will go to the Childs Play charity.
