The BlackBerry Pearl 3G is a true smartphone in slim candybar disguise, and while its calendar skills are perfect for your nine to five, they’re even more helpful in the mix at a heaving festival. There’s no need to lug an old school Filofax around with you in the mud: we show you how to stay connected with all your friends and the schedule of must see acts with the BlackBerry Pearl 3G and its wireless smarts right here in our guide.

Quickly share calendars
If you prep your plan of attack for a festival in advance – which stages to hit, what shows to see – then the best way of sharing the schedule between your friends is to make a shared calendar. You can do it on Outlook, but for serious hassle free and over the air updates, set up a shared Google calendar with all the must see acts on and invite your friends to it. With the free and easy Google Sync app, you can connect it straight to the BlackBerry Pearl 3G’s calendar, and any changes made to your timetable will update themselves on the phone in moments. If your mates are being tardy accepting an invite, just drop them an instant note over BlackBerry Messenger to confirm. For the advanced BlackBerry Pearl 3G user, you can set up multiple Google calendars to cater for multiple festivals or groups of friends, Womad won’t know what’s hit it.

Facebook your festival
You can create Facebook events for you and your friends before you set out, or just fire up the Facebook mobile site on your BlackBerry Pearl 3G to create them from the comfort of your tent – RIM’s SureType software will even suggest place names as you type. Just name the time and locale, then invite your friends to them, and if they’re using a BlackBerry too, an invite will drop right into their inbox, and connect straight to their calendar. With the free Facebook BlackBerry app installed and connected, any events will appear on your BlackBerry calendar post haste, so you can have an alarm automatically go off in your pocket when the next big band is on – never miss a beat!

Impromptu events
If you get word through the festival grapevine of a last minute line up change, or a secret gig going down off the beaten track, you can invite all your friends to a new event straight from the calendar on your BlackBerry Pearl 3G. Just choose the time, name the event and write out where it’s happening (“By the beer tent”), then press the menu button and choose to Invite Attendee. Up will pop your list of contacts, so just choose who you want to divvy up the know how with, and the invitation will land in their email inbox instantly. If they’re having trouble tracking you down, or are stuck in the queue for drinks, just send them your location over BlackBerry Messenger.
