Reports are circulating that Apple are releasing iOS4.0.1 today, on the eve of a highly anticipated and very official sounding press conference about the iPhone 4 in Cupertino California tomorrow. So how much weight is there to these rumours? And how would an iOS4.0.1 release fit with tomorrow’s conference?

iPhoneHellas.gr, a Greek iPhone website, is reporting that it has been told by a reliable source that iOS 4.0.1 is going to be released today. iPhoneHellas speculates that the iOS 4.0.1 beta that was given to developers yesterday is actually the full version which will be released through iTunes today.

The rumour holds some weight at least, as the site previously specified the precise date of iPhone OS 2.2 more than a week in advance.

The iOS 4.0.1 beta appears to fix the faulty signal display problem, and allows switching off of check spelling. Rumours that it included watermark technology to detect jailbreaks have been disproved. Unfortunately though, the death grip still appears to be present in iOS 4.0.1 beta.

Have you had iOS 4.0.1 yet? Tell us in the comments!

Of course the 'death grip' still exists. It's a hardware problem, not a software one, and firmware upgrades won't make any difference, no matter that Apple say.

iOS 4.1 was released to developers NOT 4.01. If they can't get that right then I'd take the rest with a pich of salt to say the least!!

The update is a go and it's a big one at just under 580MB!
