The iPhone 4 jailbreak we’ve been anxiously anticipating will arrive eventually but it looks like it won’t come from iPhone jailbreaking wunderkind GeoHot. The 20-year-old hacker who was behind the iPhone 3G and iPhone 4GS blackra1n and blacksn0w unlocking tools has said that although he’s achieved an iPhone 4 jailbreak, we’d better not hold our breath for a solution from him. So where does the iPhone 4 jailbreak stand right now?
The online clamour for an iPhone 4 jailbreak solution has clearly irritated GeoHot who stated in a late night blog post: “As far as a release goes, it probably won’t happen from me…the reason isn’t technical. It’s just that it will never stop, after blackra1n, people demand unlock, after blacksn0w, people demand untethered.”
There had been rumours that GeoHot was set to unveil an iPhone 4 jailbreak tool dubbed limera1n. But it seems the website that was slapped up promising its arrival was most likely fake. GeoHot says of the perhaps mythical iPhone 4 jailbreak tool: “limera1n is little more than a raindrop on a website; it was never mentioned by me previous to this post.”
While there’s a photo of an iPhone 4 running Cydia on GeoHot’s blog, it isn’t actually the proof of an iPhone 4 jailbreak that some blogs and websites have been claiming it is. GeoHot admits that himself at the end of his message: “Also, to the haters, the picture is quite obviously fake
”
On the subject of fakery, over on our iPhone jailbreak delay post, there’s a comment claiming to be from GeoHot himself: “We’re not waiting for iOS4.1 to jailbreak. Apple has plugged holes that we are working on unplugging.” No real email address has been provided so the comment could well be from an impostor. However, it chimes with comments from others working on the iPhone 4 jailbreak.
Over on Twitter, Musclenerd of the iPhone Dev Team said this weekend: “Apple doesn’t wait on the jailbreak community for anything…sure, they fix holes already public but they don’t wait.” So it seems the wait for a iPhone 4 jailbreak solution is just down to the coders wanting to get it right and a tweet from Musclenerd this morning says they’ve reached the final step.
As the wait for the iPhone 4 jailbreak goes on, are you still planning on opening up your new iPhone? Or are you sticking with iOS 4 as it arrived in the box?
