The Sony Cyber-shot WX5 and Sony Cyber-shot TX9, the latest colourful compacts from the Japanese camera cobblers, will come packing the same 3D sweep panorama mode added to the Sony NEX-5 and Sony NEX-3 last week. It’s a clever feature but only works if you’ve also got a 3D TV and 3D specs. But the Sony Cyber-shot WX5 and Sony Cyber-shot TX9 have plenty of other specs to get excited about and we’ve rounded them up below…

The follow up to the Sony Cyber-shot WX1, the 12.2MP Cyber-shot WX5 has a 2.8in LCD screen and wide-angle 24mm 5x optical zoom lens. The Sony Cyber-shot TX9 also comes packing a 12.2MP sensor but there’s a 3.5in touchscreen round the back and a 24mm 4x optical zoom lens at the front. It’s the successor to the similarly touch-friendly Sony Cyber-shot TX7.

Both the Sony Cyber-shot WX5 and Sony Cyber-shot TX9  will grab 1080p HD video at up to 60i. They also feature a new shooting mode dubbed Superior Auto mode. Like Intelligent Auto it’ll automatically detect what sort of scene you’re shooting and choose the appropriate settings.

The difference with Superior Auto is that it’ll grab multiple shots when you press the shutter and put them together to create the final image. The idea is that by smashing together between two to six shots, you’ll get less noise and improved sharpness.

The Sony Cyber-shot WX5 and Sony Cyber-shot TX9 models also include Sweep Multi Angle mode which grabs 15 shots at different angles and splices them together into one shot. You’ll apparently then be able to tilt the camera to view the  pseudo-3D shot from different angles.

The Sony Cyber-shot WX5 and Sony Cyber-shot TX9 are set to hit the UK in September. Sony’s yet to release pricing for the clever compacts but we’ll let you know as soon as it does.

Do you like the sound of Sony’s latest Cyber-shot creations? Are 3D features you want to see more of in new cameras? Or are they one of those fads that fail to get you fired up?
