An unofficial HTC Desire Froyo Android 2.2. update is in the pipeline, and it’s got an extra killer feature for anyone willing to venture off the beaten path into the land of rooted phones and custom ROMs: HD video recording!

We said last week that you shouldn’t pick up a phone like the Samsung Galaxy S or HTC Desire based on the promise of a future Froyo update, but for those willing to tinker, the same doesn’t really apply, as the first Froyo hacks are starting to arrive for the HTC Desire, though there’s no date for an official upgrade.

A dabbler over at XDA Developers (of course) has already got a version of Froyo that supports HTC Sense working on his HTC Desire, and put up screenshots to prove it. He’s also posted evidence of something else it flicks on: 720p HD video recording, which the HTC Desire does not allow for by default.

Don’t buy your phone for a Froyo update

As you can see in the footage shot below by the HTC Desire Foryo hacked phone, the results aren’t half bad, with some pleasing clarity, if a not blistering framerate (You may need to switch to 720p in the settings in the bottom right corner).

If you’re a HTC Desire owner itching for a Froyo upgrade, we suggest you head over to the thread on the forums and keep an eye on it throughout the day, as the ROM is expected to be released soon. If you get it, let us know how it works and how Flash support fairs on the Google Nexus One’s custom brother.
