Got iPhone 4? Want to make FaceTime calls over 3G and not willing to wait for Steve Jobs and the networks to enable it? Jailbreak your iPhone 4 and there’s now an app for that. Read on to discover how to unlock iPhone 4 FaceTime 3G calling…
iPhone jailbreak fans have known about a clever little app called 3G Unrestrictor for yonks. Available from the App Store’s unruly unofficial cousin Cydia, it’s long been fooling iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS models into thinking they’re on Wi-Fi when they’re really burning through 3G. Now it’s been updated to add iOS 4 and iPad support.
That change is good news for iPhone 4 owners who want to try FaceTime over 3G. Though FaceTime calls are currently locked to Wi-Fi, if you jailbreak your iPhone 4 and grab 3G Unrestrictor, you’ll be able to hop onto 3G to make your video calls.
As well as fooling FaceTime, 3G Unrestrictor will also trick Skype into playing nice over 3G while thinking it’s still on Wi-Fi. iPhone Skype calls on 3G are free right now anyway but charges are set to arrive in 2011. 3G Unrestrictor alos works with a long list of other apps including YouTube, the iTunes Store and App Store to grab podcasts, apps and videos over 20MB.
Remember though, you jailbreak your iPhone 4 at your own risk and, as we revealed last week, FaceTime data usage is ginormous, so you could find yourself facing a hefty bill if you go mad with 3G FaceTime calling. 3G Unrestrictor will set you back $2.99 from Cydia.
