Good news! BBC 6Music has been saved from closure after the BBC Trust found plans to shut the station were unconvincing. The move follows a massive Twitter uproar when the BBC 6Music closure plans were first announced with the #save6music hashtag spread far and wide. Read on for the BBC Trust’s statement on BBC 6Music…

In a long and comprehensive report on the BBC’s digital doings, the BBC Trust says: “as things stand, the case has not been made for the closure of 6Music. The Executive should draw up an overarching strategy for digital radio. If the Director General wanted to propose a different shape for the BBC’s music radio stations…the Trust would consider it.”

While BBC 6Music seems safe for now that bureaucratic lingo means it could still be in line for changes in the future if BBC boss Mark Thompson punts another plan to the BBC Trust. The BBC Asian Network is still under threat with the BBC Trust declaring that it would consider a new formal proposal to kill the station off.

The #save6music Twitter campaign played a big part in getting BBC 6Music off the chopping block. The BBC Trust says there was “significant public support for the service” and reveals that 78% of the 50,000 online responses to the plans were about 6Music.
