When we reviewed the Spotify iPhone app last year, our only complaints were that you couldn’t run it in the background while surfing the web or using another app, and the lack of headphone remote controls. Now though? Those problems are gone. The promised update to the Spotify iPhone app has hit the App Store, and we’ve got all the details on it right here.

Since iOS 4 now allows for app switching on the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and 3G iPod touch, it was only a matter of time before the feature appeared in the Spotify iPhone app. It’s now available for Premium subscribers in the App Store, and it works just as promised, though a few extra bells and whistles have been thrown in too.

For one, you can now control the Spotify iPhone app via the headset remote buttons, and lock screen controls brought up by a double tap of the home button. A “What’s New” tab has also been added, along with the ability to share tracks and albums.

While we’ve not been able to confirm this yes, we’re seeing comments on the official blog post claiming that the new Spotify iPhone app now shuts down after no music is played for 10 minutes to save on battery. We’ve contacted Spotify to confirm, and will update when we hear back, but for Spotify Premium subscribers, it looks like iTunes is now dead. Until iTunes streaming arrives, anyway.

Still not available for Blackberry, also don't know why they haven't created a web based version, this would also allow mobile browser playing.
