Samsung Galaxy S review: Build and battery
Let’s get things straight. The Samsung Galaxy S has some absolutely monstrous tech inside: a 4-inch Super AMOLED screen, 1GHz CPU and five megapixel camera capable of shooting delightful HD video don’t come cheap. But Samsung’s not forced operators’ hands regarding pricing in quite the same way Apple has with the iPhone 4, meaning there are better deals to be had if you look around.
Early adopters
Early adopters should try and pick up the Samsung Galaxy S unlocked if at all possible, especially since we’re now hearing rumours that Android 3.0 could be out by the end of the year. The Samsung Galaxy S is quite resilient so shouldn’t be hard to keep in good nick and flog on eBay when the Next Big Thing comes along. You could always buy a new plastic back if it gets scuffed.
Vodafone has the exclusive on the 16GB version of the Samsung Galaxy S, and is only selling it on contract, but we’ve found the two best places to buy the 8GB version unlocked, which still has a microSD slot for boosting storage.
Handtec: UK site Handtec sells the Samsung Galaxy S 8GB unlocked for £421.80 with standard delivery, or £425.28 with next day courier. For added security, we’d go for the latter.
Clove: Close sells the 8GB Samsung Galaxy S for slightly more, at £445.53, but you get an 8GB microSD card thrown in, bringing storage up to 16GB.
Best for data slurpers
It’s possible to get the Samsung Galaxy S on a contract with Vodafone, O2 and Orange (Though the latter doesn’t list it on its own website) but you’ll need to shop around here. There are lots of deals to be had on price comparison sites, but not all of them include data.
Regardless, Vodafone should the best choice here since it offers 1GB of data rather than 500MB, but only through Voda’s official site. However, we’ve spotted an 18 month deal on O2 with 1GB of data still, 600 minutes and unlimited texts for £35 per month, and a £19.99 handset cost. We’re not fans of two year lock ins, so we’d plump for this while it’s still available.
Best for storage hogs
The microSD slot on the Samsung Galaxy S means there’s really no need to buy the version with 16GB of internal storage, since you can add 32GB yourself. But if you absolutely must have the potential for 48GB of total space (Greedy), then Vodafone is your only option.
Of its tariffs, we’d recumbent the £35 per month over two years: there’s no upfront cost, and you get 1GB of data, unlimited texts and 900 minutes. Do you use more than 900 minutes? We hope you use a headset, is all we’ll say.
Best for travellers
Going abroad regularly with your Samsung Galaxy S? We’ve spotted a great deal that gets you one with Vodafone’s Passport service for cheaper calls abroad, and on an 18 month contract too, through Mobiles.co.uk, with a £39.99 upfront cost and £35 per month charge. If you need a bit of data too for email, Vodafone’s two year contracts on £35 or above include 5MB of Euro data. Note that’s Euro zone – don’t turn Gmail on over 3G in the States or you may get burned!
