Google and Facebook have been sparring in the traffic stakes for months, but now the search giant looks like unleashing it’s own social network to take on Zuckerberg and co. Again. After Buzz and Wave, Google Me is the Big G’s latest rumoured attempt to tempt our pokes and tags to their side of the web.

Web entrepreneur and Digg.com founder Kevin Rose claims to have the inside track on Google Me, claiming in a tweet over the weekend that “Ok, umm, huge rumour: Google to launch facebook competitor very soon “Google Me”, very credible source.”

Contradictions of “rumour” and “credible source” aside, Rose isn’t the only person to speculate on Google Me’s existence. Respected tech-head and social networking guru Chris Saad has also tweeted that Google Me is an upgrade to Google’s existing profile pages.

Meanwhile blogger Louis Gray points out the coder responsible for Google Buzz, Rick Klau, has since jumped ship to be in charge of Google Profiles.

Can Google take on Facebook at its own game? If anyone’s capable of going head to head with Zuckerberg’s team, it’s Larry and Sergey. But with a film already released under the title “Google Me”, and Google Me hardly functioning as a verb in the same way “Facebooking” does, we’re struggling to buy into the rumour just yet. Give us your thoughts below.

I know that having one article against facebook doesn’t drive Conde-Nast’s entire policy, but I do find it ironic that the page as I’m viewing it right now has not one, but two Facebook “like” buttons on it. I’ve been against Facebook for other reasons historically, but this latest round of moves is over the top. When you decide that making money at the expense of your users’ good will, you deserve everything that you get.

Well colour me confused Elean! We're not owned by Conde Nast… and we don't make any money from having Facebook buttons on our site – we put them there to make it easy for readers to share stories that interest them. Also, the two buttons do different things.

The “Like” button just adds our posts' headlines to your Facebook feed – it's pretty unobtrusive, but a nice way of spreading the word.

The Facebook Share button shares an excerpt, picture and link with your friends. It also lets you add your own comment to go with it.

Try it, you might like it!

How about “Oodle” as in “oodles of fun” “oodles of friends”

The word pairs up with Google nicely.
