Third party apps are crashing after ios4 updates are madeDespite unbridled excitement for yesterday’s iOS4 release, unsurprisingly, the iOS 4 release hasn’t gone without a hitch. One of the biggest problems has been with apps, specifically, third party apps working on iOS 4.

Developers were only given a week or so to update and submit their apps for iOS 4, and as a result, many haven’t made the changes, meaning that countless apps are crashing left right and centre because iOS 4 updates haven’t been made yet. And maybe it’s not quite the app-ocalypse, but a raft of apps have been failing.

Another partial disappointment is iOS 4’s Holy Grail – the much-hyped multitasking. Sure, it’s there and it will work with native apps, just not quite yet, because until all your third party apps are updated for iOS 4, they wont work with multitasking, so don’t get too excited.

Some of those reported to be floundering in the face of the new OS are Last.fm, TapFarm, Godfather gaming apps, SoundHound, and Rooms. The good news is that apps that are iOS 4 compatible are being marked in the app store with “iOS 4.0 tested”, which so far includes LinkedIn, WordPress, and (crucially!), the I am T-Pain vox app (which turns your voice quite convincingly into a robotic, autotuned T-Pain.

Here’s a handy google search to keep a tab on the updates (via @jihuiwen). Our full support guide for iOS4 is here, plus a guide to installing here.

    all working great here!!

the “edit” function in iTunes was long overdue and the best thing about iOS4 !! hallelujah!
Loving the zoom in function in the camera as well as the ability to lock the orientation (fab!!).
I'm not impressed with the folders and don't particularly care about the multitasking.

Installation was fine, all apps work great and I've already backed up twice without any problems.

    Hi all,

Well who would of thought it now the great Apple has decided to start giving the same features most other smart phones have had well for ever things aren't going quite so well. Now that's with even their version of multitasking so whilst loads of iboys are all drooling over the great new iOS now I'm reading loads of people having problems with apps and other things. So what happened to Apple only make one iPhone so it all just works and they release software infrequently as it's all about the quality and just works then?

It really does seem the times they are a changing and this all before most apps start trying to play with Multitasking could be interesting times ahead. Never mind eh you'll get a Retina display on your new iPhone4 as of course that resolution on a 3.5″ is really so necessary because Steve told you it is so it must be true.

Wasn't one of the major reasons Steve Jobs gave for not allowing Flash was that it was third party software and Apple couldn't guarantee its stability in future OS releases? …stability that was 100% guaranteed for all Apps as they were developed in a fully compliant environment using Apple Software Developement tools.

So how come there is now a problem? All Apps were stated by Apple to be future-OS-upgrade-proof !

Maybe Apple should allow Flash …as I certainly would like the functionality, and I now seem to have the slow and crashing iPhone that Apple warned Flash would bring…

Or maybe Apple should ban/wipe all non-iOS4 Apps that are on iOS4 phones. This ban would obviously start with Safari as it is now so unstable it constantly stalls for 20 seconds loading pages and then crashes.
