Despite unbridled excitement for yesterday’s iOS4 release, unsurprisingly, the iOS 4 release hasn’t gone without a hitch. One of the biggest problems has been with apps, specifically, third party apps working on iOS 4.
Developers were only given a week or so to update and submit their apps for iOS 4, and as a result, many haven’t made the changes, meaning that countless apps are crashing left right and centre because iOS 4 updates haven’t been made yet. And maybe it’s not quite the app-ocalypse, but a raft of apps have been failing.
Another partial disappointment is iOS 4’s Holy Grail – the much-hyped multitasking. Sure, it’s there and it will work with native apps, just not quite yet, because until all your third party apps are updated for iOS 4, they wont work with multitasking, so don’t get too excited.
Some of those reported to be floundering in the face of the new OS are Last.fm, TapFarm, Godfather gaming apps, SoundHound, and Rooms. The good news is that apps that are iOS 4 compatible are being marked in the app store with “iOS 4.0 tested”, which so far includes LinkedIn, WordPress, and (crucially!), the I am T-Pain vox app (which turns your voice quite convincingly into a robotic, autotuned T-Pain.
Here’s a handy google search to keep a tab on the updates (via @jihuiwen). Our full support guide for iOS4 is here, plus a guide to installing here.
