Readers rejoice! iBooks for iPhone and iPod Touch has arrived in the wake of iOS 4. If you’ve managed to get the update installed you can now start building your virtual library on your iPhone or iPod Touch as well as your iPad. Read on for a quick rundown of the new features slipped into the iBooks iOS 4 update…

The new version of iBooks adds support for PDFs so you can sling them into iTunes and sync them to your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch. It’ll also open and read PDFs fired over to you via email and add them to your iBooks library for future reference.

If you’re rocking an iPhone and an iPad, the iBooks update will keep your reading synced between the two so you don’t lose your place. Apple’s also added the ability to bookmark whole pages as well as highlighting words or phrases in iBooks and slipped in Georgia as a new font option (Steve Jobs loves his typography).

The free Winnie The Pooh iBook is still up for grabs for iPhone iBooks owners and you’ll also be able to get at the 30,000 free Project Gutenberg books in the iBooks Store.

The iPhone version of iBooks works just like its iPad cousin so it’s worth checking out our iPad iBooks review to get the lowdown on the app. The iBooks update is available for free now in the iTunes App Store but you’ll need to be running iOS 4 to install it.

Let us know how you find reading iBooks on the iPhone’s smaller screen. Will it only come into its own with iPhone 4’s super-sharp Retinal screen?
