The iPhone 4 will add one irritation for folk used to switching their SIM card between phones: that micro-SIM simply won’t fit into other handsets. But luckily, Orange will be offering a solution – free micro-SIM adaptors for anyone opting for the Orange iPhone 4 deals. That got us wondering: are you a SIM swapper?

While we’re waiting to see if the free Three iPhone 4 tethering offer we spotted this morning gets official, Orange has offered up free micro-SIM adaptors as its own minor incentive. Conor Maples (aka ConorfromOrange on Twitter), Orange’s PR manager, revealed that it will be giving out the handy bits of plastic to customers who opt for the iPhone 4 on Orange.

The iPhone 4 micro-SIM adaptors will mean you’re able to slot the slimmed down card into any other phone you’re packing. That could come in handy if you’re headed to a festival and not keen on getting your iPhone 4 pinched or prone to losing phones when you’ve had one too many. Hopefully the other networks will give them out too.

With just over 3 days until iPhone 4 launch, are you planning on packing the new iPhone and another handset? Let us know what phone you’ll be pairing your new pride and joy with and why. And remember you can butcher your own DIY microSIM.

At least Orange and O2 actually have some kind of system in place. Vodafone on the other hand have handled this terribly. And that's an understatement.

Whereas with the others, you can just pop in and get your number switched onto a microsim, Voda are giving shocking advice to everyone (there's a rather long thread on their own eForum about this). Options being given are:

    1. You can't do this. Microsims are for iPad only.

    2. You aren't allowed to switch your number onto a micro sim unless you change to an iPhone tariff.

    3. New customers only, or you can only have a new sim if the phone is bought through them, not Apple.

    4. Can only be done in store (from telephone CS).

    5. Can only be done over the phone (from stores).

The list goes on and on, some not even knowing that the iPhone uses microsims and with some people actually being sent iPad cards when requested. There are going to be a hell of a lot of Voda customers who have ordered a sim free who have it delivered on Thursdaay who will be unable to use it. It's disgusting in this day and age.

I joked elsewhere that Apple would use the micro sim (albeit in the countries where they are legally required to offer unlocked handsets) and this would then be used by the networks to artificially restrict who could use one, insisting that you have an iPhone plan. Looks like certain networks are trying to get away with this.

I know i'll be chopping mine down. Many normal non-techy people won't and it'll leave a bad taste in their mouths come their contract end.

Given that orange “made a mistake” and have no micro sims available for those that have bought a sim free iphone this is not much use. I now have the most expensive paper weight in the world due to crass incompetence of orange – my advice try someone else
